Mexico Beach is continuing its recovery and rebuild after Hurricane Michael devastated the area in 2018. The storm destroyed approximately 75% of the structures in the city. New construction is elevated and built to modern coastal standards. A major shoreline project, completed in the spring of 2025, placed nearly 1 million cubic yards of sand to rebuild dunes and widen the beach. The project covers the three-mile stretch from Mexico Beach Canal to the Gulf County line. The beach berm will extend approximately 175 feet from the seaward toe of the proposed dune. Developments like Salt Creek, a 554-acre master-planned community, are adding townhomes, apartments and single-family homes. Another community, Sugar Sand, features luxury single-family homes and townhomes built between 2021 and 2024. These homes have direct beach access and resilient construction.
