Bellevue Cafe Launches Kickstarter for Workforce Training

Bellden Cafe in downtown Bellevue has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new workforce training program. The initiative aims to provide culinary skills opportunities for the community. The funding will also support the launch of a new tea and dinner program as the cafe expands its outreach.

Bellden Cafe's commitment to community support is foundational to its business model, established by owner Claire Sumadiwirya long before this Kickstarter. The cafe has a history of donating proceeds from specific menu items to over 30 different local charities and provides paid time off for employees to volunteer. The inspiration for Bellden's community focus stems from Sumadiwirya's personal experience in Shanghai when her son was hospitalized. The kindness of hospital staff, who brought her coffee and soup, motivated her to create a business that provides that same sense of care and community. This new workforce development program targets individuals with limited industry experience, including refugees, survivors of human trafficking, single mothers, and people with disabilities. Since opening, the cafe has already created over 200 jobs and logged more than 2,000 hours of paid volunteer time. The Kickstarter campaign aims to raise $36,800 to fund professional equipment for tea and dinner service, develop a formal training curriculum, and enhance the cafe space. The program will teach participants skills in tea service, dinner hospitality, and table-side service techniques. Rewards for the Kickstarter campaign are directly produced by program trainees, including handmade granola, in-house candles, and a custom-developed signature barista coffee roast. Donors' names will also be featured on a student-created mural within the cafe.
