Generic Semaglutide Coming to Online Pharmacy

PharmaGiant.com has announced it will soon offer a generic version of semaglutide, a popular drug used for diabetes and weight loss. The move aims to increase affordability and access for patients amid rising prescription drug costs in the U.S.

The active ingredient in brand-name drugs Ozempic and Wegovy is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps control blood sugar and reduces appetite. While Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for weight management, both are often sought for weight loss. Without insurance, the cost of these medications in the U.S. is substantial, with Wegovy's list price at approximately $1,350 and Ozempic's at around $1,028 for a month's supply. This high cost has created a significant barrier to access for many patients. The patent for semaglutide, held by Novo Nordisk, is a complex issue. In the United States, the main patent is not expected to expire until December 2031 due to extensions. However, in other countries, such as India, Brazil, and Canada, patents are set to expire as early as March 2026, paving the way for generic competition in those markets. In India, the introduction of generic semaglutide is expected to cut the cost of the medication by about 50%, with prices potentially dropping to around ₹3,500-₹4,000 per month for an initial dose. This is a significant reduction from the branded versions' cost. Due to the high demand and cost, a market for unauthorized, compounded versions of semaglutide has emerged. Novo Nordisk has responded by filing over 130 lawsuits in 40 states against compounding pharmacies, telehealth companies, and medical spas to halt the sale of these unapproved products.
