Memorial Health is launching a free monthlong walking challenge across central Illinois, with kickoff parties on April 30 and mileage tracking through May 31. (memorial.health) The program, called Mindful Miles, is Memorial Health’s first regional walking challenge. It will run from May 1 through May 31 in Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Springfield and Taylorville. (memorial.health) Participants can join for free and log their walks in the Pacer app on a phone. Memorial Health said anyone who walks 50 miles or more during May will receive a free Mindful Miles T-shirt. (taylorvilledailynews.com) Kickoff events are scheduled for April 30 at hospital sites in all five communities before the challenge begins the next day. Decatur Memorial Hospital said its event will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the hospital walking trail. (nowdecatur.com) Memorial Health is tying the challenge to spring weather and routine exercise, with organizers framing walking as an easy activity people can do close to home. Community health consultant Galia Cossyleon said the goal is to get people outside as temperatures improve. (capitolcitynow.com) The system has run local walking efforts before, but this is the first time it has organized one across its broader central Illinois footprint. Last year, Lincoln Memorial Hospital promoted a separate “Miles of Sunshine” challenge that also ran from May 1 to May 31. (memorial.health) Memorial Health’s hospital network includes Springfield, Decatur, Jacksonville and Lincoln, and the new challenge adds Taylorville to the list of kickoff communities. The initiative extends the system’s community-events strategy beyond clinics and screenings into a shared outdoor activity. (memorial.health) The monthlong format gives Memorial Health a simple benchmark: get residents walking in May, then reward consistency at 50 miles. For participants, the next date on the calendar is April 30. (memorial.health)
