Michelin is widening its restaurant map again, adding a new American Great Lakes edition that will start rating six Midwestern cities for the 2027 guide. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the new regional guide on April 8, saying it will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. The company said its anonymous inspectors are already dining in the market and the first full selection will be revealed in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) The expansion follows Michelin’s newer U.S. habit of building regional guides with tourism partners instead of launching one city at a time. Its American South guide was introduced with support from Travel South USA and a first restaurant selection scheduled for 2025. (guide.michelin.com) That partnership model has also drawn scrutiny because destination-marketing groups help fund Michelin’s arrival. Axios reported in May 2025 that states and cities in the South were set to contribute $1.65 million a year under a three-year contract tied to the guide. (axios.com) In the Great Lakes rollout, the boundaries are tight: Minneapolis is in, but St. Paul and Twin Cities suburbs are out. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that only the six named cities are eligible for the new edition. (twincities.com) Local tourism agencies are already pitching the guide as an economic and branding tool. VisitPITTSBURGH said the new edition puts the city on Michelin’s “global culinary map,” while local coverage in Detroit framed the launch as the first chance for many restaurants there to compete for Michelin stars. (visitpittsburgh.com, usatoday.com) The Michelin brand is also still expanding restaurant-by-restaurant outside the United States. In Chester, England, The Jolly Gardeners was listed by Michelin as a restaurant in the 2026 United Kingdom guide, and the Chester Standard said the pub confirmed the inclusion on April 16. (guide.michelin.com, chesterstandard.co.uk) For diners and chefs, the next milestone is simple: inspectors keep eating now, and the stars, Bib Gourmands and recommended spots for the American Great Lakes will not be announced until 2027.
