Claire Lynch Wins Nero Gold

Debut novelist Claire Lynch just won the 2025 Nero Gold Prize (Book of the Year) for *A Family Matter* — the first debut to ever take the top prize. The novel explores family separations and lesbian mothers, drawing from Lynch's personal experience. BBC News coverage hit 22K views within hours of the announcement.

The Nero Gold Prize, launched in 2023, has rapidly become one of the most prestigious literary awards in the UK and Ireland. Lynch's win is historic, as she is the first debut novelist to secure the main "Book of the Year" award. The prize is run by the coffee house group Caffè Nero in partnership with The Booksellers Association and Brunel University London. Lynch will receive a £30,000 prize for the overall award. She had previously been awarded £5,000 in January after winning the Debut Fiction category, one of four categories alongside Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Children's Fiction. The final decision was made by a panel of judges chaired by author Nick Hornby. *A Family Matter* is set across two timelines in 1982 and the present day, exploring the long-term impact of a family secret. The novel delves into the story of a lesbian mother who loses custody of her child during a divorce, a narrative informed by real-life court cases from the 1980s when such outcomes were common. Lynch's author's note reveals that some of the harshest language in the fictional custody hearing is taken from actual court transcripts. The book has received high praise from critics, with *The Guardian* calling it "smart and heartbreaking" and *The New York Times* describing it as burning "like a sparkler, quick and mesmerising". Chair of judges Nick Hornby stated the panel admired its "wry humour, its deft storytelling, and its love for all its characters" and believes the novel "will be read and thought about for years to come". Claire Lynch is an Honorary Professor at Brunel University of London, where she taught English and Irish Literature until 2024. She lives in Windsor with her wife and three daughters and has also authored a nonfiction book titled *Small: On Motherhoods*.
