Guidewire and Sompo Deepen Cloud & AI Pact
Guidewire and Japanese insurance giant Sompo Group are significantly expanding their partnership to accelerate cloud and AI adoption. The deal focuses on using Guidewire's platform to streamline claims and underwriting, automate fraud detection, and integrate external data sources, showing how core system modernization is a top priority for global carriers.
This expanded agreement builds on a partnership between Sompo and Guidewire that has spanned 12 years. The new long-term deal will focus on migrating Sompo's existing on-premise Guidewire software, including ClaimCenter and PolicyCenter, to the Guidewire Cloud Platform. The initial rollout will target Sompo's global commercial lines and its direct-to-consumer business in Japan. The collaboration is a key part of Sompo's broader digital transformation strategy, which began in 2016 with the establishment of its SOMPO Digital Lab in Tokyo and Silicon Valley. The company's goal is to unify decision-making across its various global entities and leverage Guidewire's AI and data analytics tools to improve operational efficiency. Sompo has been actively investing in startups and forming alliances to accelerate its digital initiatives and create new business models. For Guidewire, this deal with a major global insurer reinforces the industry's shift toward cloud-based core systems. Property and casualty (P&C) insurers are increasingly replacing legacy systems to gain scalability and agility. The adoption of cloud platforms in the P&C industry has surged from 29% in 2020 to 85% in 2023. Guidewire's AI capabilities are central to the expanded partnership. The platform integrates machine learning and generative AI to enhance underwriting, claims processing, and fraud detection. Insurers using Guidewire's AI-driven tools have reported reductions in manual underwriting efforts by 30-40% and have cut standard claims processing times by 40%. The move to Guidewire Cloud is expected to provide Sompo with greater operational resilience, with Guidewire Cloud customers experiencing 99.95% uptime. The platform's architecture is designed to allow for continuous updates and faster deployment of new products.
