Anthropic ties API credits to subs

Anthropic has redrawn the line between its flat-rate Claude subscriptions and its metered developer billing, and the practical effect is showing up in customer support pages, usage dashboards and user complaints. The company now says Pro and Max subscribers can use Claude Code through the same subscription they use for Claude’s apps, but any usage that falls into “extra usage” or authenticates through an API key is billed separately at standard API rates. Anthropic’s help center says those charges can apply even when a user is logged into Claude Code with a paid Claude subscription. The changes follow Anthropic’s broader April move to stop third-party tools from drawing against consumer subscription limits and to introduce prepaid usage bundles for overages. ### If I already pay $20 or $200 a month, what exactly is included? Anthropic says Pro and Max plans now include access to both Claude in its web, desktop and mobile apps and Claude Code in the terminal under “one unified subscription.” The company’s Claude Code support page says users should log in with the same credentials they use for Claude to connect the subscription to Claude Code. The company says bundles can discount overage spending by 10% to 30%, depending on size. ### Why are some Claude Code users seeing API charges at all? (support.claude.com) Anthropic says Claude Code gives priority to an environment-variable API key over a subscription login. The company’s support article states that if `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` is set on a system, Claude Code will use that key for authentication and bill usage to the associated API account at pay-as-you-go rates. Anthropic advises users who want subscription-backed Claude Code access to leave the environment variable unset and to check `/status` inside Claude Code to confirm which authentication method is active. A login article warns that use of third-party tools that “attempt to route third-party traffic against subscription limits” is prohibited, and tells developers building products for others to use API-key authentication through Claude Console or a supported cloud provider. That means the company is separating included subscription usage from metered pools, while still letting one prepaid balance cover multiple Anthropic surfaces after the threshold is crossed. The company says those credits can be used for API access, Workbench usage and Claude Code. The distinction is important because Anthropic also maintains a separate Claude subscription billing system.
