Great Lakes Michelin edition

Michelin is bringing its restaurant guide to the Great Lakes for the first time, but Cincinnati is not in the new six-city edition. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced on April 8 that its American Great Lakes edition will cover Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh, with the first restaurant selection due in 2027. Michelin said its anonymous inspectors are already dining in those cities and the ceremony date will be announced later. (guide.michelin.com) The guide does more than award one, two or three stars. Michelin’s Great Lakes rollout is also expected to include Bib Gourmand picks for good value and Green Star recognition for sustainability, following the model it uses in other U.S. markets. (travel.yahoo.com) Cincinnati’s omission became its own local story on April 23, when reporting in the USA Today network said chefs and diners in the city were surprised to be left out. That coverage said Visit Cincy’s interim president and chief executive, Julie Kirkpatrick, attributed the miss to “a missed email” from October 2025 and said the group was trying to get the city added. (dispatch.com) The economics behind these guides are not incidental. Reporting from Cleveland.com, cited by follow-up coverage, said Destination Cleveland is paying $150,000 a year for three years as part of the city’s participation in the Great Lakes edition. (bluewaterhealthyliving.com) Michelin has been moving away from a coast-and-big-city map in the United States. Since 2022, it has added or expanded guides in Florida, Texas, the American Southwest, the American South and now the Great Lakes, with Michelin saying the regional format lets inspectors go beyond a single urban core. (guide.michelin.com) The American South shows what that regional strategy looks like in practice. Michelin’s inaugural South selection, announced in November 2025, covered 228 restaurants across the region, including 1 two-star restaurant, 18 one-star restaurants, 50 Bib Gourmands and 159 selected restaurants. (guide.michelin.com; michelin.com) For the six cities that made the cut, local tourism groups are already framing Michelin as a visitor draw as much as a dining honor. Michelin’s own announcement included statements from destination officials in Cleveland and Detroit tying the guide to hotel stays, restaurant sales and international visibility. (guide.michelin.com) For Cincinnati, the next test is whether a city left off the launch can still get into a guide built around regional tourism partnerships. For now, the Michelin map of the Great Lakes starts elsewhere, and the first answers will not arrive until the 2027 selection. (guide.michelin.com; dispatch.com)
