Project Liberty Institute to Headline India AI Summit
The Project Liberty Institute (PLI) will play a leading role at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. PLI President Tomicah Tillemann is scheduled to join global partners in advocating for ethical AI governance, a "pro-human AI stack," and individual user data sovereignty.
- Project Liberty was founded by civic entrepreneur Frank McCourt and publicly launched in 2021 to promote a more equitable internet where individuals have control over their personal data. The institute is the steward of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), an open-source public utility designed to create a shared social layer not dependent on a single centralized platform. - The main session PLI will co-host is titled "Building Trust: Digital Infrastructure Fit for the AI Era," in partnership with the Stanford Institute on Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and the Global Solutions Initiative. Speakers are set to include Dr. Arvind Gupta of the Digital India Foundation and Robert Opp, the Chief Digital Officer for the United Nations Development Programme. - The India AI Impact Summit is a global event hosted by the Government of India, focusing on shaping AI for the public good, with an emphasis on amplifying the voice of the Global South. The summit will feature prominent global leaders, including the CEOs of Alphabet, OpenAI, and Microsoft, alongside heads of state. - The concept of individual data sovereignty means that personal data is subject to the laws and governance of the region where it is collected and processed. In the context of AI, this extends to control over the AI models that consume the data and the frameworks that govern its use. - A "pro-human AI stack" refers to an approach that prioritizes human agency and values by design across three layers: the infrastructure (data, models, protocols), the applications, and the assurance (auditing and accountability).
