IBF Pulls Sanction from Opetaia Fight

The International Boxing Federation withdrew its sanction for the Jai Opetaia vs. Brandon Glanton cruiserweight title bout scheduled for March 8. The IBF reversed course after initially granting sanction in February, leaving the fight's title status and future in uncertainty.

The core of the issue is the involvement of Zuffa Boxing's new title. The IBF does not recognize Zuffa Boxing as a legitimate sanctioning body, viewing it as a rival promoter. According to IBF rules, a champion cannot participate in a bout for an unrecognized title within their weight class; doing so results in the title being declared vacant. This marks the second time Jai Opetaia has lost the IBF cruiserweight title outside of the ring. In December 2023, he vacated the belt to fight Ellis Zorro instead of his mandatory challenger, Mairis Briedis, only to regain it in a rematch with Briedis in May 2024. Opetaia's team initially assured the IBF that the Zuffa Boxing belt would be treated as a "trophy or token of recognition" to get the Glanton fight sanctioned. However, the pre-fight press conference on March 6th promoted the bout as a contest for the Zuffa World Cruiserweight title, prompting the IBF to withdraw its sanction. With the IBF title now vacant, the fight will proceed for Opetaia's *Ring* Magazine championship and the inaugural Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight title. Opetaia's stated goal of becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion is now significantly more complicated, as he no longer holds one of the four major world titles (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO).
