China Touts 'Intelligent Manufacturing' for Green Energy
Chinese state-owned enterprise Harbin Electric Corporation (HE) is promoting its use of intelligent manufacturing to accelerate a green, low-carbon energy transition. The company, a major exporter of power equipment, is positioning its advanced manufacturing capabilities as a key driver for developing new global power systems.
Harbin Electric's push into intelligent manufacturing is part of a broader Chinese national strategy. This initiative aims to increase the output value of "green factories" to over 40% of the country's total manufacturing output by 2030, a significant goal considering the manufacturing sector accounts for 45% of China's carbon emissions. The company is implementing what it calls "digital intelligence" across its subsidiaries, leading to significant increases in annual production value. In 2024, Harbin Electric Machinery Company, Harbin Turbine Company, and Harbin Boiler Company saw their production values increase by 19.22%, 49.21%, and 56.7%, respectively, by optimizing their business structures with advanced technologies. A key component of this strategy is the use of digital twin technologies and AI-driven smart operations. For its hydropower division, Harbin Electric has developed a cloud service platform that integrates intelligent fault diagnosis, product maintenance, and spare parts management to provide remote operation and maintenance services. This technological shift is evident in their production facilities, where automated production lines, robotic arms, and digitally controlled milling machines are utilized in the manufacturing of components for power equipment. Additionally, all of Harbin Electric's manufacturing enterprises have successfully passed the national audit for "Green Factory" certification. Harbin Electric International's projects have demonstrated tangible results in sustainability, with one power plant recording CO2 emissions of 214 kg/MWh, well below the International Finance Corporation's limit of 325 kg/MWh. The same project also reported a noteworthy 61.61% efficiency rate and a 99.29% availability factor in its sixth year of operation. The company's focus on intelligent systems extends to its international projects. For overseas construction, Harbin Electric International has developed a "Smart Site Management Platform" that uses cloud platforms, mobile internet, and smart devices to manage personnel, machinery, and materials, enhancing safety and efficiency.
