San Francisco Court Clerks End Strike

San Francisco Superior Court clerks have ended their strike after reaching a tentative agreement with the city. The strike had disrupted court operations, but clerks are now expected to return to work on Monday, signaling a return to normal for the city's judicial system.

The two-day walkout by approximately 200 San Francisco Superior Court clerks, represented by SEIU Local 1021, marked a significant escalation in their long-standing dispute with court management. This was the first time in the city's history that the court clerks' strike extended beyond a single day. The primary grievances centered on chronic understaffing, inadequate training, and the resulting increase in workload, which the union argued was unsustainable. The strike caused significant disruptions to the city's justice system, leading to the postponement of trials and the dismissal of juries. While the court aimed to keep essential and emergency services running with the help of management staff, many courtrooms were closed, and public access to services like the criminal case information window was shut down. The action compounded existing backlogs within a system already strained by a shortage of public defenders. This recent strike was not an isolated incident but the culmination of a protracted negotiation process. The same issues of staffing and training led to a one-day strike in October 2024. Although a one-year agreement was reached in January 2025, the union contended that court management failed to adequately address the core problems. Another tentative agreement was rejected by 62% of the union members in October 2025, setting the stage for the most recent walkout. The new tentative agreement includes concessions from court management on cost-of-living adjustments and time off. Additionally, it contains a commitment to a "thorough, unit-by-unit" approach to address the critical staffing and training issues. The agreement now awaits a ratification vote by the roughly 220 members of the clerks' union.
