NEURA and SECO build humanoid compute
- NEURA Robotics and SECO said on September 7 they will jointly design, engineer and manufacture compute modules in Europe for NEURA’s robots, including 4NE1. - Qualcomm Dragonwing processors are the central named component, with NEURA saying the modules fit its distributed “Brain + Nervous System” robot architecture. - NEURA and SECO said the next step is scaling series production in Europe and developing industrial automation applications for semiconductor manufacturing.
NEURA Robotics and SECO said on September 7 that they are partnering to build the compute modules for NEURA’s cognitive robots in Europe, including the humanoid 4NE1. The German robotics company said SECO, an Italian embedded-computing specialist, will handle the design, engineering and manufacturing of the electronic modules. The companies said the hardware will support series production in Europe and will use Qualcomm Technologies’ Dragonwing processors. NEURA and SECO also said they will work together on automation and industrial-data systems for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. ### What exactly are NEURA and SECO building together? SECO said the partnership covers “electronic compute modules” for NEURA’s cognitive robots, rather than a complete robot built by SECO. NEURA said those modules will go into machines including 4NE1, its humanoid platform, and will form part of a broader distributed compute system inside the robot. NEURA described that system as a decentralized “Brain + Nervous System” architecture tied to its “Smart Limbs” concept. (neura-robotics.com) The company said the arrangement is meant to distribute processing across the robot instead of relying on a single centralized board. ### Why does the Europe point matter in this deal? Metzingen, Germany, and Arezzo, Italy, were named in the companies’ announcement as the operating bases for the collaboration. (neura-robotics.com) The two companies said the goal is to industrialize and scale “Physical AI” from Europe, with SECO manufacturing the hardware at the volumes NEURA needs for expansion. The companies did not say the entire semiconductor stack would be European. (neura-robotics.com) Qualcomm Technologies is supplying the Dragonwing processors inside the modules, according to both companies, while SECO is responsible for engineering the modules and producing them in Europe. ### Where does Qualcomm fit into the stack? Qualcomm Technologies was identified by NEURA as the compute-platform provider underlying the modules. (neura-robotics.com) SECO’s existing edge-AI product lineup includes boards and systems based on Qualcomm Dragonwing processors, and the company has recently presented Dragonwing-based hardware for production edge-AI deployments. The deal therefore combines three layers: NEURA’s robot architecture, SECO’s embedded design and manufacturing, and Qualcomm’s processors. (neura-robotics.com) NEURA said that combination is intended to support scalable production of cognitive robots from Europe. That is an inference from the companies’ stated roles in the partnership. ### Is this only about the humanoid 4NE1? 4NE1 is the most visible robot named in the announcement, but the companies said the modules are for NEURA’s “cognitive robots,” not only the humanoid line. (neura-robotics.com) NEURA’s product pages list industrial and service robots alongside 4NE1, and the release says the compute modules are meant for the broader portfolio. NEURA describes 4NE1 as a humanoid designed for industrial workflows and everyday assistance. (neura-robotics.com) In the partnership announcement, however, the companies tied the hardware effort to manufacturing scale and deployment rather than to a launch date for the humanoid itself. ### What else did the companies say they will do? The September 7 announcement said NEURA and SECO will also develop “real-world industrial data and automation solutions” for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. (neura-robotics.com) The companies said those technologies could eventually be deployed globally, though they did not provide a product timetable or financial terms. SECO’s robotics and physical-AI materials say it is targeting modular embedded computing, edge AI and lifecycle-management tools for robotics customers. (neura-robotics.com) NEURA, for its part, has been building out a European footprint around 4NE1 development, including a Zurich site it said would focus on the humanoid’s holistic development while production remains in Metzingen. NEURA and SECO said on September 7 that the immediate milestone is series production of the compute modules in Europe for NEURA’s robots, while the longer track includes joint industrial solutions for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. (neura-robotics.com) Neither company disclosed volumes, pricing or a delivery date for the first 4NE1 systems using the modules. (seco.com)
