2026 NFL Combine Underway

The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine is in progress, with extensive media coverage focusing on top draft prospects' workouts and performances. Analysts are tracking which players are improving their draft stock ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft. Projections for the first two rounds are being updated based on combine results, with players like Rueben Bain Jr. and Jeremiyah Love under scrutiny.

Before 1982, NFL teams conducted their own costly, individual workouts with draft prospects. The National Invitational Camp (NIC) was established in Tampa, Florida, as a centralized event to streamline the medical and physical evaluation process for multiple teams. After several years in different locations, including New Orleans and Arizona, the combine moved to Indianapolis in 1987 and has remained there since. The city's Lucas Oil Stadium was even designed with extra meeting spaces specifically to accommodate the event's needs. While medical exams are still the top priority, the event has evolved into a comprehensive four-day job interview. Over 300 prospects attend by invitation only, where all 32 NFL teams conduct physicals, drug screenings, and up to 60 interviews in 15-minute slots. The on-field drills are designed to measure specific athletic traits beyond raw talent. For instance, while the 40-yard dash showcases straight-line speed, scouts pay close attention to the 10-yard split time to evaluate a player's explosive start, a critical metric for linemen. Other drills test different forms of athleticism. The broad jump and vertical jump are used to measure a player's explosive power, while the 3-cone and 20-yard shuttle drills evaluate agility, body control, and the ability to change direction quickly. What was once a private evaluation for team personnel has transformed into a significant media event. The combine was first televised on the newly launched NFL Network in 2004, and coverage has since expanded to more than 30 hours, drawing millions of viewers. The combine also delivers a notable financial benefit to its host. The 2022 event, for example, had an estimated economic impact of $9.6 million for the city of Indianapolis.
