Blume Ventures on India's Dual Tech Opportunity

Blume Ventures co-founder Karthik Reddy believes India's biggest opportunities lie in two distinct areas: Indian talent building tech for global markets, and founders solving uniquely Indian problems. He argues that founders who build with technology at their core, rather than just as an enabler, will be the ones who scale differently and achieve massive success.

Blume's investment thesis extends to deep-tech and hardware-focused companies building for the world, exemplified by their early backing of GreyOrange. Founded in 2011 by BITS Pilani alumni Samay Kohli and Akash Gupta, GreyOrange builds AI-powered robotic automation for warehouses and fulfillment centers, now commanding a 90% market share in India's warehouse automation sector. The founders' journey began with building a humanoid robot in college, which gained recognition and led to product development requests, eventually shaping their focus on industrial robotics. For technical founders, the early journey often involves a delicate balance between perfecting the product and securing initial customers. The founders of GreyOrange spent three years developing their flagship "Butler" robot while simultaneously building a "Linear Sorter" to generate revenue and secure further funding, a crucial strategy in the Indian ecosystem. This highlights the practical need to demonstrate market traction even while engaged in deep-tech development. In the developer tools space, Blume has backed companies like Appsmith, an open-source platform for building internal applications. Appsmith's founders identified a gap for a developer-focused, self-hostable internal tool builder, as existing solutions were primarily aimed at non-technical users and lacked the flexibility developers require. Their initial go-to-market strategy was heavily community-driven, recognizing that developers often prefer to try and audit open-source software before committing to a purchase. Acquiring the first set of users for a developer-focused product often relies on targeted, non-scalable efforts. The Appsmith team initially reached out to a small, known circle of developers who needed such a product. For broader outreach, they focused on creating content that helps new users understand and succeed with the product, rather than traditional growth marketing. This approach of prioritizing developer success and building a community is a common thread among successful developer-tool startups. The decision to adopt an open-source model is a strategic one for many developer-focused startups. For Appsmith, being open-source was crucial for several reasons: it allowed developers to adopt the tool without going through lengthy procurement processes, it enabled security-conscious organizations to self-host and audit the code, and it fostered a community of contributors who could help extend the platform's capabilities. Monetization for such models often comes from an "open core" approach, where the core product is free, but enterprise-grade features, managed hosting, and dedicated support are paid services. Blume Ventures also supports the "solving for India" side of the dual opportunity, with investments in companies tackling uniquely Indian challenges. This strategy acknowledges that as India's economy grows, there will be a massive expansion in consumption across various sectors, and technology will be the foundation for scalable solutions. This dual focus allows Blume to tap into both the global software market and the burgeoning domestic digital economy. Karthik Reddy emphasizes that founders who build with technology at their core, rather than just as an enabler, are the ones who will scale differently. He looks for founders who are deeply passionate about the problem they are solving and possess the resilience to navigate the long and often challenging journey of building a startup. This founder-centric approach, combined with a focus on community building among their portfolio companies, is a key aspect of Blume's strategy.
