Southampton Art Gallery Reopens

Southampton City Art Gallery is reopening after a £2 million refurbishment, with Arts Council England chair Sir Nicholas Serota calling it a "great moment" for the city. The gallery promises a refreshed visitor experience and renewed programming for art lovers.

The total cost for the restoration of the Grade II* listed gallery was £4.3 million. A significant portion of the funding came from a £2.23 million grant provided by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's Museum Estate and Development Fund, which is administered by Arts Council England. The extensive year-long renovation focused on crucial infrastructure to protect the gallery's nationally important collection. This included major re-roofing, the installation of insulated asphalt, new air-conditioning, and a sustainable ventilation system which has been integrated with the city's geothermal network for improved energy efficiency. Southampton's collection, which holds over 5,300 works spanning six centuries, is considered one of the finest in the UK outside of London. It is particularly renowned for its holdings of 20th-century British art, featuring works from the Camden Town Group, Surrealists, and St Ives-based artists. The entire permanent collection is designated by the government as being of pre-eminent national significance. The reopening features the major solo exhibition "Levitate Me: Desire, Ecstasy and The Sublime" by Southampton-born artist and musician Emma Richardson. Richardson is also known as the bassist and backing vocalist for the band Pixies. Visitors can also see a range of new acquisitions displayed for the first time. These include the sculpture 'Centrifugal Forces' by Laura Ford, a video installation by Ian Giles, and works on paper by key 20th-century British artists such as Elisabeth Frink and Paul Nash. Alongside the physical refurbishment, a separate £26,000 project is underway to digitize around 1,000 light-sensitive works on paper from the collection. This initiative, in partnership with Southampton Solent University, will make these rarely seen pieces accessible to the public online.
