Arctic Northern Lights Expedition Departs

A Hurtigruten cruise focused on the aurora borealis departed from Tromsø on March 7. The voyage through Norway's far north highlights a growing travel trend combining adventure, natural phenomena, and wellness-focused experiences.

The timing for this expedition is exceptional, as it coincides with the peak of Solar Cycle 25, predicted to be the most intense solar maximum in decades, which significantly increases the frequency and intensity of the Northern Lights. After 2026, solar activity is expected to decline, with the next peak not occurring until the mid-2030s. The journey's destinations are all located within the auroral zone. The itinerary includes the Lyngen Alps, known for snowmobiling and dog sledding, and Senja, Norway's second-largest island, offering dramatic landscapes for snowshoeing and wildlife safaris. The route also features Vesterålen, a year-round whale watching hotspot, and the Malangen fjord, an area with minimal light pollution ideal for aurora viewing. Onboard the recently refurbished MS Spitsbergen, guests have access to a Science Center. Hurtigruten Expeditions facilitates passenger involvement in citizen science projects, such as contributing aurora sightings to the Aurorasaurus project, which helps track the lights in real-time, or collecting cloud data for NASA's GLOBE Cloud Observer program. This type of expedition reflects a significant tourism boom in Northern Norway. The winter of 2022-2023 saw a 10% increase in tourism income compared to pre-pandemic levels, with projections for continued growth. However, this surge has also raised environmental concerns, prompting the Norwegian government to implement stricter emission regulations for cruise ships in its fjords starting in 2026. Hurtigruten has appointed astronomer Tom Kerss as the "Chief Aurora Chaser" to provide expert insights on designated voyages, enhancing the educational focus of their Northern Lights sailings. The company also offers a "Northern Lights Promise," providing a credit for a future cruise if no aurora is sighted and officially recorded by the ship's officers during the voyage.
