UBS Cuts Banker Perks, Cites AI

UBS is phasing out meal stipends for its bankers, a long-standing perk of the industry. The bank's reasoning is that AI tools are making workflows so efficient that bankers can finish their work earlier, reducing the need for late-night meals.

The move to eliminate meal stipends is part of a much larger efficiency drive at UBS, which is targeting $13 billion in gross cost savings by the end of 2026. This aggressive cost-cutting follows the bank's emergency takeover of its rival Credit Suisse in 2023, a deal that significantly increased its global workforce. At the heart of this strategy is a significant investment in artificial intelligence. CEO Sergio Ermotti has emphasized that UBS is rolling out AI-enabled capabilities to redesign both front- and back-office processes, aiming to "unlock higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness." The bank has already launched over 300 AI use cases across its operations. Specific AI tools being deployed include an in-house "AI Assistant Red" to make institutional knowledge more accessible to employees and M365 Copilot licenses being rolled out to 55,000 employees. In its M&A division, UBS has developed an AI "co-pilot" that can analyze a database of over 300,000 companies in under 30 seconds to generate deal ideas. The rationale for cutting late-night meal perks is that these new AI tools will automate and accelerate routine tasks, allowing bankers to complete their work earlier and reducing the need for late nights at the office. Historically, meal allowances, typically around $30 at UBS, have been a standard industry perk for junior bankers who often work past 8 or 9 p.m. However, reports on the demise of the meal stipend are conflicting. While the connection between AI efficiency and the perk cut has been reported, some financial news outlets claimed in early March 2026 that UBS is not, in fact, phasing out the meal allowances for its junior bankers, creating uncertainty around the policy's future.
