Russian "Shadow Fleet" Tanker Seized
Belgium, with French naval support, has seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea believed to be part of the Kremlin's "shadow fleet." The move marks a significant step in sanctions enforcement, showing a growing European resolve to crack down on Russia's attempts to circumvent Western energy restrictions.
The seized tanker, identified as the "Ethera," was intercepted in the North Sea within Belgium's exclusive economic zone. The operation was carried out by Belgian special forces, who boarded the vessel from helicopters with support from the French Navy. The ship is now being escorted to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to be formally confiscated. Authorities report the Ethera was flying a false Guinean flag and that its documents are suspected of being forgeries. The vessel, which has been on a European Union sanctions list since October 2025, was reportedly on its way back to Russia when it was seized. The ship's captain, a Russian national, is currently being questioned by investigators. This operation is part of a broader effort to enforce a G7-imposed price cap of $60 per barrel on Russian seaborne crude oil, a measure designed to slash Moscow's war-funding revenues. The European Union has also banned all seaborne imports of Russian crude oil and petroleum products to limit the Kremlin's income. Russia's "shadow fleet" is a collection of aging, often poorly insured tankers with opaque ownership structures used to transport its oil outside the purview of Western sanctions. By using this fleet, Russia aims to continue its lucrative energy exports despite international restrictions. Maritime intelligence suggests the seized tanker, Ethera, may also have links to Iran through the family of a former senior political advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, highlighting the intricate networks used to evade international sanctions. French President Emmanuel Macron described the seizure as a "major blow" to the shadow fleet, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the "strong action against Moscow's floating purse." The Russian embassy in Belgium has stated it received no official notification about the seizure and is seeking clarification. This seizure represents an increasingly assertive stance by European nations against sanctions evasion. In January, French authorities intercepted another suspected shadow fleet tanker, the Grinch, in the Mediterranean, and the U.S. seized a sanctioned tanker in the Caribbean.
