Amazon Injects $50B into OpenAI

Amazon has committed up to $50 billion to OpenAI as a key part of the AI lab's record $110 billion funding round. The deal will see OpenAI's most advanced models deployed at scale on Amazon Web Services (AWS), cementing a massive strategic partnership targeting enterprise and government clients.

This record $110 billion funding round places OpenAI's pre-money valuation at a staggering $730 billion. Alongside Amazon's cornerstone investment, existing backers Nvidia and SoftBank each contributed an additional $30 billion to the AI lab. Amazon's $50 billion investment is structured in two phases: an initial $15 billion, with a subsequent $35 billion contingent on specific triggers, which could include an IPO or reaching an "AGI milestone". The entire commitment has an expiration date of December 31, 2028. As part of the deal, OpenAI is expanding its existing cloud computing agreement with AWS by an additional $100 billion over eight years. This includes a commitment for OpenAI to utilize 2 gigawatts of power from Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips, a significant infrastructure move. This major investment doesn't nullify OpenAI's long-standing partnership with Microsoft. Both companies issued a joint statement reaffirming their existing agreement. Microsoft's Azure remains the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI's stateless APIs, meaning even calls from third-party collaborations like Amazon's will be hosted on Azure. For Amazon, this move deepens its AI arsenal, adding to its significant investments in OpenAI competitor Anthropic. The investment is seen as a strategic play to secure a foundational role in the AI infrastructure landscape for its AWS division. The massive influx of capital reflects the soaring costs of developing advanced AI, with funds being directed toward immense infrastructure build-outs rather than just software development. In the first two months of 2026 alone, AI-related companies raised approximately $160 billion, nearly matching the total for all U.S. startups in 2023.
