New Alliance Aims to Digitize Hospitality Logistics
A new alliance between the HORECA Professional Expo (HIP) and DECOD aims to enhance purchasing and logistics in the hospitality sector. The partnership will focus on driving digital transformation to improve efficiency in the hotel, restaurant, and catering supply chains. The initiative seeks to modernize procurement processes for hospitality operators.
The HORECA Professional Expo (HIP) is a major European innovation hub, drawing over 61,000 executives to Madrid to engage with more than 1,000 exhibitors focused on hospitality tech, equipment, and new operational concepts. The expo's "Hospitality 4.0 Congress" specifically targets digital transformation, making it a key platform for launching technology-driven partnerships. DECODE, the other partner in the alliance, develops custom logistics software designed to tackle supply chain inefficiencies. Their expertise includes creating warehouse management systems (WMS) that automate order processing, AI-powered tools for route optimization, and platforms that provide real-time shipment tracking and supply chain visibility. For multi-island resort operators, the core challenge is managing logistics across diverse geographies with high transportation costs—cargo movement in the Caribbean can be two to three times more expensive than in other regions. These complexities, combined with varying local customs regulations, create significant hurdles for maintaining a consistent and cost-effective supply chain. A key technology for hotel groups is a unified inventory management system providing multi-property stock visibility. Modern platforms integrate with property management (PMS) and point-of-sale (POS) systems to track supplies in real-time, automate reordering, and allow for strategic resource sharing or bulk ordering across different locations to reduce procurement costs. This leads to a central strategic question for operators like Sandals: whether to use a centralized distribution hub or a regional, multi-node model. A centralized warehouse simplifies inventory control and reduces safety stock but can increase transport times and costs to outer islands. A regional model offers faster delivery but adds operational complexity and potentially higher costs for managing multiple facilities. The alliance between an innovation event and a logistics tech firm highlights a broader industry shift. Hotels are increasingly leveraging technologies like AI for demand forecasting and the Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time asset tracking to combat rising operational costs and labor shortages. The goal is to automate and connect disparate systems to reduce waste and improve margins.
