Chiefs Make Quiet Roster Move

The Kansas City Chiefs have quietly re-signed a linebacker ahead of the free agency rush. While not a blockbuster deal, the move focuses on maintaining depth and strengthening special teams. It serves as a reminder that successful roster construction depends on retaining key role players, not just star talent.

The linebacker retained by the Kansas City Chiefs is Cole Christiansen, who agreed to a one-year contract extension worth $1.215 million, with $247,500 of that guaranteed. This move solidifies a key special teams player before the main wave of free agency begins. Christiansen, a product of Army, has carved out a vital role on special teams. A notable example of his impact came in the AFC divisional playoffs against Buffalo, where he and Leo Chenal stopped a fake punt attempt by Damar Hamlin on a direct snap, a critical play in the Chiefs' 27-24 victory. Before joining Kansas City, Christiansen entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, where he spent two seasons. He initially signed with the Chiefs just ahead of their back-to-back Super Bowl-winning seasons, primarily contributing on special teams. Over his four years with Kansas City, the 28-year-old has appeared in 18 games, recording eight tackles, mostly on kickoff and punt coverage. His leadership and value to the team were recognized when he was named a team captain for the 2025 season finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.
