AI Agent to Automate Ocean Shipping Logistics
Logistics tech firm project44 has unveiled an AI Ocean Exceptions Agent to autonomously resolve shipping disruptions. The system is designed to handle "rolled" containers by automatically identifying the issue, rebooking the shipment, and communicating the solution with minimal human input.
A "rolled" container is one that doesn't get loaded onto its scheduled cargo vessel. This can happen for many reasons, including overbooking by the carrier, missing or incorrect paperwork, port congestion, or the vessel skipping a port altogether. Such events cause significant delivery delays, with containers sometimes waiting a week or more for the next available sailing, disrupting the entire supply chain. The new AI agent is built on project44's logistics data graph, which connects approximately 259,000 carriers and tracks 1.5 billion shipments annually across 186 countries. This vast dataset allows the AI to identify potential roll risks earlier by using real-time execution data instead of relying on static shipping schedules. Early deployments have shown the agent can reduce the time it takes to detect a rolled container and prepare for rebooking from hours to under five minutes. This Ocean Exceptions Agent is part of a larger suite of autonomous agents offered by project44. These AI tools are designed to automate and resolve various supply chain exceptions. In the past year, project44's agents have initiated nearly one million automated communications with carriers to address visibility gaps and improve data quality. Founded in 2014 by Jett McCandless, Chicago-based project44 has become a major player in supply chain visibility. The company has raised a total of approximately $912 million over several funding rounds, reaching a valuation of $2.7 billion by 2022. Its platform provides real-time tracking and automation for major brands across industries like manufacturing, retail, and automotive.
