Economic Bifurcation Prediction for Entrepreneurs

Michael D. White predicts economic bifurcation between tech-savvy entrepreneurs who thrive and others who don't make it, with new jobs emerging from necessity (2 likes, 25 views). This suggests a widening gap between those who adapt to AI/tech tools and those who don't.

The concept of a bifurcated economy, often described as a "K-shaped" recovery or divergence, is where different parts of the economy experience sharply different outcomes. For entrepreneurs, this suggests a split where businesses that leverage new technologies grow, while those that don't stagnate or fail. This trend is reinforced by data showing high-income consumers are faring well while lower-income households struggle, impacting the potential customer base for different types of small businesses. A significant driver of this division is the adoption of Artificial Intelligence. There's a noticeable gap in AI usage between large and small firms; one report noted that while over a third of large companies use AI, just over 8% of small firms do. The primary barriers for small businesses include high costs, a lack of time for training, and a shortage of skilled talent. Despite the adoption gap, small businesses are increasingly turning to AI. In 2025, 58% of small businesses reported using generative AI, a significant increase from 40% in 2024. For those that have integrated AI, 91% report revenue increases, and growing small businesses are 1.8 times more likely to invest in the technology than those that are declining. The bifurcation also extends to job creation. The World Economic Forum predicted that automation and AI would displace 85 million jobs by 2025 but create 97 million new roles. This creates a dynamic of "necessity entrepreneurship" in response to job automation, alongside "opportunity entrepreneurship" that leverages new technologies to create innovative business models. Interestingly, 82% of small businesses that use AI actually increased their workforce over the past year.
