California Avocados Arrive at Fremont Farmers Market
It's officially California avocado season, and fresh batches are now available at the Fremont Farmers Market. Local growers like Farmer Ram Singh are bringing their harvests to stands, making it a good time to stock up on the heart-healthy fruit for salads, snacks, and toast while supporting local agriculture.
While California avocados are available from spring through summer, the peak season for the popular Hass variety typically runs from April through July. The harvest starts in the south of the state in early spring and moves northward, with avocados from different regions reaching their peak oil content and flavor at different times. Though the Hass variety accounts for the vast majority of California's avocado harvest, local farmers markets may also feature other types. Keep an eye out for Fuerte avocados, known for their smooth skin and fruity taste, or the pear-shaped Pinkerton, which has a high oil content and creamy richness. Other varieties grown in the state include Bacon, Gwen, Lamb Hass, and Reed. The state's avocado industry, which includes about 3,000 growers, creates over 14,500 jobs and contributes significantly to the California economy through grower spending and business activity. In 2025, the California Avocado Commission projected a harvest of 375 million pounds, the largest since 2020. Avocados are a nutrient-dense food, rich in nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. They are a good source of fiber, healthy monounsaturated fats, and vitamins C, E, K, and B6. The healthy fats in avocados can help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and may reduce the risk of heart disease. For a budget-friendly meal, try a warm corn and avocado salad, or blend avocado into a creamy pasta sauce as a substitute for dairy. You can also make a simple and refreshing avocado and tomato salad with a light vinaigrette. For a quick and healthy snack, try a four-ingredient avocado and chickpea dip with fresh vegetables.
