SpaceX Delays Starship Lunar Lander

SpaceX's Starship lunar lander program faces further delays, prompting NASA to restructure Artemis III as a low Earth orbit docking demonstration.

The Starship HLS has faced at least two years of delays since NASA selected it in 2021 for the Artemis program. These delays are due to technical challenges and the complexity of SpaceX's design. NASA's Inspector General released a report stating that more time is needed to clear the remaining hurdles before Starship can land humans on the moon. NASA has restructured Artemis III, initially planned as the first crewed lunar landing since 1972, into a low Earth orbit docking demonstration scheduled for 2027. This mission will test docking operations between the Orion capsule and commercial lunar landers, including SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon. The shift aims to test critical systems and reduce risks before astronauts attempt a lunar landing. The agency still aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2028, potentially using Artemis IV. NASA is considering using whichever lander is ready for service, or potentially using one company's lander for both Artemis IV and V missions if only one is available. The agency has added an extra Artemis test mission and acknowledged the technical challenges its contractors face. A key challenge for Starship is in-space refueling, which requires multiple launches to deliver propellant to orbit. Tanker versions of Starship will transfer fuel to a storage depot, which will then refuel the lunar lander. Demonstrating cryogenic propellant transfer in orbit is a critical step before Starship can be certified for lunar missions. Despite the delays, SpaceX has conducted 11 Starship test launches since 2023, gradually improving the system's performance. NASA officials emphasize the importance of testing the integrated systems of the lander and Orion in low-Earth orbit before attempting a lunar landing. The Starship HLS is intended to transport astronauts from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface and back.
