Visa Deploys AI to Modernize Payments

Visa's Intelligent Authorization is part of a broader suite of AI-powered services known as VisaNet +AI. This portfolio includes Smarter Stand-In Processing (STIP), which uses deep learning to make approval decisions on behalf of issuers during outages with up to 95% accuracy, and Smarter Posting, which predicts the likelihood of a transaction amount remaining consistent through clearing. Another service, Smarter Settlement Forecast, provides 7-day forecasts to help clients manage liquidity. The system's machine-learning engine analyzes transaction data in real-time, optimizing routing decisions based on network rules and regional regulations. This payment orchestration helps boost approval rates, which average 96.3% globally, and supports a 99.999% uptime. The platform is accessible to acquiring banks and financial institutions through a single API connection, reducing the need for costly infrastructure overhauls. This move reflects a broader industry trend of acquiring AI expertise. In December 2024, Visa completed its acquisition of Featurespace, a company specializing in real-time, AI-driven payment protection technology. This follows a pattern seen with competitors like Mastercard, which acquired the AI fraud detection firm Brighterion in 2017. The underlying technology addresses the growing complexity of payments from digital wallets and emerging forms of "agentic commerce," where AI agents transact on behalf of consumers. Visa is actively working with over 100 partners to build an ecosystem for this new form of commerce, with pilot programs anticipated by early 2026. The goal is to enable AI agents to securely use Visa's network for everything from booking travel to paying recurring fees.
