Meta pushes in-platform editing

Meta launched a mobile editing app called Edits as an alternative to third-party tools, signaling a push for creators to make content inside its ecosystem. Meta has moved another piece of the creator workflow inside its own apps, adding a standalone video editor and a short window to fix Instagram comments. (about.fb.com) Meta launched Edits on April 22, 2025 as a free iPhone and Android app under Instagram’s name. The company said the app supports capture up to 10 minutes, clip-level editing, project management, and performance insights. (about.fb.com) The App Store listing says Edits exports in 4K with no watermark, while Google Play says the app has passed 50 million downloads and carries a 4.6-star rating. Those store listings also describe Edits as a phone-first tool for making videos and sharing them to “any platform.” (apps.apple.com) (play.google.com) Instagram’s comment change is smaller but points the same way. Instagram’s Help Center says users can edit a comment by tapping it, choosing “Edit,” and making changes within 15 minutes of posting. (help.instagram.com) That means two parts of the same job now sit closer to Meta’s own products: making the video and cleaning up the conversation under it. Meta said Edits was built with creator feedback gathered since 2024, and the company later added more features in December 2025, including new effects and expanded editing controls. (about.fb.com) The timing was not subtle. Instagram head Adam Mosseri first teased Edits in January 2025, just as TikTok and ByteDance-owned CapCut were briefly unavailable in United States app stores, and Meta released the app three months later. (pcmag.com) (techcrunch.com) Meta has kept widening the pitch since launch. In June 2025, it added generative video editing prompts to the Edits app through Meta Artificial Intelligence tools, and in November 2025 it announced more Edits features including bulk caption editing, reverse video, lip sync, and hundreds of added sound effects. (about.fb.com 1) (about.fb.com 2) Meta’s public line is that Edits is for creators publishing anywhere, not only on Instagram or Facebook. But each added tool gives Meta one more reason for creators to start, finish, and polish their posts without leaving Meta’s ecosystem. (about.fb.com) (techcrunch.com)
