Ilia Topuria Sparks UFC Controversy
Ilia Topuria stirred controversy by calling the Gaethje vs. Paddy Pimblett fight "fucking horrible," prompting backlash from Benoit Saint Denis' camp who accused him of downplaying threats. The comments have divided UFC fans and fighters on social media.
The controversy began after newly-crowned lightweight champion Ilia Topuria dismissed the highly anticipated Gaethje vs. Pimblett interim title fight. Topuria, who has a long-standing feud with Paddy Pimblett, took to social media to mock Pimblett for losing what he called "the biggest paycheck of your life." He also sent a warning to the winner, Justin Gaethje, stating, "you're screwed no matter what." This drew a sharp rebuke from the camp of rising lightweight contender Benoit Saint Denis. His manager, Guillaume Peltier, accused Topuria of strategically downplaying formidable opponents. Peltier claimed Topuria has a habit of calling dangerous fighters "average" to avoid facing them and pointed out that Topuria only ended his "pseudo-pause" from the sport once it was confirmed he would fight Gaethje. The "pseudo-pause" Peltier referred to was a hiatus Topuria took starting in late 2025. The champion cited personal reasons, including what he described as an extortion attempt involving "false allegations of domestic abuse." Topuria stated he was taking legal action and needed to step away to protect his family and reputation. Before this controversy, Saint Denis himself had opined that Topuria has not faced stylistically difficult opponents. While acknowledging Topuria is a "very good fighter," Saint Denis believes there are several fighting styles that could give the champion problems and expressed his desire to eventually face him. This latest war of words only adds fuel to a potential future showdown in the stacked lightweight division.
