RI Volunteers Shovel Out Neighbors

In the wake of a recent blizzard, volunteers across Rhode Island mobilized to shovel snow for their neighbors. The widespread community effort was highlighted as a powerful example of local support during severe weather events.

The "Blizzard of 2026" inflicted a significant economic toll on the region, with preliminary estimates placing the total damage and economic loss for the Northeast between $34 billion and $38 billion. The storm, which brought record-breaking snowfall to Rhode Island with nearly 38 inches in some areas, led to widespread business closures and disruptions to supply chains. The Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses across the state, acknowledged the significant impact on local companies. For businesses in Northern Rhode Island, the storm presented considerable operational challenges. Many companies faced short-staffing, work backlogs, and power outages. The impact of the travel ban, while essential for safety, meant a near-total shutdown of the local economy for a period. Municipal budgets across the state, including those in the Woonsocket area, were heavily strained by the costs of snow removal, with many already in the red before this storm hit. In Woonsocket, major employer CVS Health took proactive steps before the storm to ensure continuity of services. The company reached out to pharmacy patients to encourage prescription refills and stocked stores with emergency supplies. Aetna, a CVS Health company, also activated its Resources For Living program, providing mental health support and information on community resources to affected individuals and organizations, including its own employees. The recovery effort highlighted a trend of interstate and community collaboration. Rhode Island invoked the Emergency Management Agency Assistance Compact, bringing in crews and equipment from states like Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont to assist with the massive snow cleanup. At a more local level, some businesses contributed to the recovery by providing food and support to first responders and plow drivers who were working around the clock.
