A six-town hazardous waste drop-off is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, in Farmington, giving residents a place to bring chemicals and other trash that cannot go in the bin. (farmington-ct.org) The collection runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Farmington High School, 10 Monteith Drive, and it is open to residents of Avon, Canton, Farmington, Granby, Simsbury, and Suffield. (farmington-ct.org) Town notices in Farmington, Avon, Granby, and Simsbury say residents should bring proof of residency and stay in their vehicles while attendants direct the drop-off line. (avonct.gov, granby-ct.gov, simsbury-ct.gov) Household hazardous waste means products such as pesticides, paints, cleaning chemicals and antifreeze that can contaminate landfills, drains, soil or water if they are dumped with regular trash. Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says these collections generally run from April into early November and advises residents to check local rules before bringing materials. (avonct.gov, portal.ct.gov) This Farmington stop is the first of three regional collections planned in 2026. The other two are set for June 13 and October 10 at the Simsbury Public Works Facility, 66 Town Forest Road. (farmington-ct.org) Canton said this year’s arrangement also marks a change for its residents: the town is no longer participating in the Metropolitan District Commission collection program, so Canton households now use the Farmington-Simsbury regional events instead. (townofcantonct.org) Farmington’s event page says the program also includes electronics recycling and shredding information, and Avon’s notice says the hazardous waste collections are intended to keep these materials out of the transfer station and landfill. (farmington-ct.org, avonct.gov) For residents in the six towns, Saturday’s collection is the first local chance this year to clear out old solvents, fuels and similar household chemicals without putting them into the regular waste stream.
