IT Firm Expands HQ in "Tech Hub" Miami

Underscoring Miami's growth as a business center, IT services firm VirtuWorks announced a major expansion of its Coral Gables headquarters. The company is growing its footprint to over 10,000 square feet to keep pace with the city's expanding tech ecosystem.

The expansion of VirtuWorks is not just a company milestone, but a reflection of a long-term local technology narrative. Founded in Miami in 1994 by Omar Armenteros and Matt Mehler, the company originated as one of the area's first Internet Service Providers (ISPs), initially offering 14.4k dial-up access. This deep-rooted history showcases a homegrown tech firm evolving alongside the city itself. "Miami's emergence as a global business hub requires strong, secure technology foundations," said VirtuWorks CEO Omar Armenteros. He emphasized that the company's expansion of its engineering and operational capacity is a direct response to the increasing demand for managed IT and advanced cybersecurity solutions as more firms move into the region. This trend is part of a larger migration of major tech and finance companies to South Florida. High-profile firms like Citadel, Palantir Technologies, and Microsoft have recently relocated or significantly expanded their operations in the Miami area. This influx is driven by factors including Florida's favorable tax environment and a business-friendly climate. The city's tech ecosystem has seen explosive growth, with venture capital funding increasing by 200% between 2021 and 2023. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, South Florida tech companies attracted $900 million in venture capital. This investment surge has helped Miami's startup scene expand by 28%, the highest growth rate of any U.S. city in the top 30 global rankings. This transformation is supported by local leadership, notably Mayor Francis Suarez, who has actively courted tech investment. Initiatives like the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority and partnerships with local universities aim to cultivate a homegrown talent pipeline to support the thousands of new tech jobs being created.
