Adirondack Hiker Found Dead

A Florida hiker who went missing on an Adirondack trail was found dead on February 26. The incident underscores the importance of preparation, emergency planning, and check-in protocols when hiking or backpacking alone in remote areas.

The deceased hiker was identified as 51-year-old Theodore S. Troth of The Villages, Florida. He had been staying at Rowe's Adirondack Cabins in Schroon, New York, since January 25, renting a cabin for a month-long stay. Troth was last seen on February 19 when he left his cabin to hike the Crane Pond Trail in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. The alarm was raised five days later, on February 24, when the cabin owner contacted authorities after Troth failed to check out as scheduled. A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched by New York State Police and the Department of Environmental Conservation. The coordinated effort included Forest Rangers, K-9 units, drones, and snowmobiles to cover the rugged, snowy terrain. His body was discovered by Forest Rangers at approximately 6:24 p.m. on Tuesday near the south end of Oxshoe Pond, an area accessible from the Crane Pond Trailhead. Authorities have stated that there were no signs of foul play. An autopsy has been scheduled at Glens Falls Hospital to determine the cause of death.
