Google has released a native Gemini app for Mac, bringing its artificial intelligence assistant out of the browser and onto the desktop. (blog.google) The macOS app opens with the keyboard shortcut Option + Space, supports screen and window sharing, and can summarize files or answer questions without forcing users to switch tabs. Google said the app is free for Macs running macOS 15 or later. (blog.google) Google Workspace’s update blog said the Mac app is aimed at people working across documents, spreadsheets, and research tasks, with Gemini available as a floating assistant from anywhere on the desktop. (workspaceupdates.googleblog.com) Until this week, Mac users mostly reached Gemini through the web or through Google Chrome. 9to5Mac said the dedicated app had been in testing in March before the public release on April 15. (9to5mac.com) The timing puts Google’s consumer assistant directly on Apple’s desktop as Apple heads toward its June Worldwide Developers Conference, where artificial intelligence features are expected to stay central to the company’s software pitch. Recent Apple-focused coverage has linked the Mac app launch to that broader contest over who supplies the assistant layer on Apple devices. (9to5mac.com) That Apple angle has been building for months. 9to5Mac reported in January that Apple had confirmed Google’s Gemini would power parts of the new Siri effort, and later reports said the two companies were still refining how Gemini-based models would be used inside Apple software. (9to5mac.com, 9to5mac.com) Google has also been widening Gemini beyond chat. In 2025 and 2026, the company added Deep Research, connected Google app integrations, image and video generation, and newer Gemini 3 features across the app and Chrome. (blog.google, blog.google, blog.google) On Mac, the pitch is simpler: keep Gemini one shortcut away while working in other apps. After years of browser-first access, Google now has a native place on one of Apple’s core platforms. (blog.google, 9to5mac.com)
