Payscale Report Reveals Shifting Compensation Strategies

Payscale's 17th annual Compensation Best Practices Report reveals that companies are shifting their pay strategies in response to AI and labor market volatility. The report analyzes how organizations are adapting their compensation models to attract and retain talent in a rapidly changing economic environment. The findings highlight new trends in salary structures, bonuses, and non-monetary benefits.

- The average pay increase for 2026 is holding steady at 3.5%, but there is a notable shift in how these raises are distributed, with 44% of organizations giving or considering "peanut butter" pay increases where all employees receive the same amount regardless of performance. - A primary challenge for more than half of organizations (51%) is balancing employee pay expectations with their own financial limits. Despite this, 60% of employers are confident that their pay increases are competitive. - Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to analyze large datasets for salary benchmarking, identify pay disparities, and ensure internal equity. Some companies are using AI to offer personalized total rewards packages, allowing employees to trade salary for equity or swap benefits for bonuses in real-time. - The labor market is cooling, which is reducing the leverage employees had during the post-pandemic hiring boom and leading to a return of more predictable and stable compensation growth. - While salary budgets are moderating, the cost of employee benefits now accounts for nearly 30% of total compensation for workers in private industry. - There's a growing trend of an "in-person premium," with some data showing that from 2024 to 2025, employees working in an office received higher compensation increases than their fully remote counterparts. - In Maryland, the average salary for full-time workers is $96,831, with the median at $75,407, which is higher than the national average due to the proximity to Washington, D.C. and a high concentration of government and tech jobs.
