Teens' AI App Acquired for Up to $320M

The AI-powered calorie tracking app Cal AI, built by teenagers using ChatGPT, has been acquired by MyFitnessPal. The bootstrapped app hit an impressive $50M ARR in just 18 months, with the deal estimated to be worth between $120-320 million. The acquisition highlights the massive success of its 25-year-old co-founder, Blake Anderson, who has launched three ChatGPT-bootstrapped apps with over $60M in combined revenue.

Cal AI's core innovation was simplifying calorie tracking by using AI to analyze a photo of a meal, a stark contrast to the manual data entry required by established apps like MyFitnessPal. This focus on a frictionless user experience allowed the app to amass over 15 million downloads and achieve significant revenue in under two years. The app's technology can recognize food items from a picture and estimate their nutritional information, including calories and macronutrients. Co-founder Zach Yadegari began coding at age seven and sold his first website, a gaming platform, for six figures as a teenager. He and his co-founders, including Blake Anderson, identified a gap in the market for a more user-friendly calorie tracker than the incumbents. Anderson himself has a track record of creating successful AI-driven apps, including RizzGPT and Umax, which have generated millions in revenue. The acquisition is a strategic move for MyFitnessPal, a company with a 20-year history and over 200 million registered users, to combat the threat posed by newer, AI-native applications. The rise of generative AI and visual recognition technology made traditional manual-entry apps vulnerable to disruption. Prior to acquiring Cal AI, MyFitnessPal had already integrated with ChatGPT Health and acquired the meal-planning app Intent. MyFitnessPal plans to operate Cal AI as a standalone product, recognizing that the two apps serve different user needs. MyFitnessPal users are often focused on precise, detailed tracking, while Cal AI appeals to those who prioritize speed and ease of use. As part of the deal, the Cal AI team, including its co-founders, will join MyFitnessPal.
