Pokémon Champions live

Pokémon Champions launched on April 8 for both Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2, and players can import teams from Pokémon HOME to jump straight into battles — plus the Video Game Championships are moving to this title for 2026. (pokemon.com) (nintendolife.com)

For years, serious Pokémon battling lived inside a role-playing game built for exploring, catching, and story quests. On April 8, The Pokémon Company split the battle system into its own game, Pokémon Champions, on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. (pokemon.com) That means players no longer have to finish a long campaign in Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet just to start practicing for tournaments. Pokémon Champions is a battle-focused release with Ranked Battles, Casual Battles, and Private Battles from day one. (champions.pokemon.com) The shortcut is Pokémon HOME, which is the cloud storage app where players keep creatures from different Pokémon games in one place. Champions can pull in certain Pokémon from HOME, so a team built in older games can move straight into the new battle client. (pokemon.com) (champions.pokemon.com) There is one catch: not every stored monster gets a free pass. The official site says only Pokémon that already appear in Champions can be brought over, and imported Pokémon may need retraining if they know moves the new game does not support. (champions.pokemon.com) The game is also built around the part of competitive Pokémon that tournament players actually use. It supports both Single Battles, where one creature fights at a time, and Double Battles, the two-on-two format used in the Video Game Championships circuit. (champions.pokemon.com) (nintendo.com) Mega Evolution is back too, which is the temporary mid-battle power-up first seen in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The official Champions site says trainers use an Omni Ring as the trigger device, and the company is already hinting that the ring could support other battle gimmicks later. (pokemon.com) The business model is different from a normal $60 cartridge. Nintendo Life lists Champions as free-to-start, while the official site says a Starter Pack, battle passes, and other optional purchases sit on top of the base download. (nintendolife.com) (champions.pokemon.com) Nintendo Switch 2 owners are getting a separate perk at launch. The Pokémon Company says the new system has a free update for clearer graphics, while the same game remains available on the original Nintendo Switch. (pokemon.com) The bigger shift is not the launch day download but the tournament calendar behind it. Play! Pokémon says Video Game Championships moved to Pokémon Champions as the standard platform on April 8, with Global Challenge I scheduled for May 1 through May 4 under Regulation M-A. (pokemon.com 1) (pokemon.com 2) The first live official Championship Series stop to use only Champions will be the Indianapolis Regional Championships on May 29 through May 31. After that, the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco will run Video Game Championships battles on Champions instead of Scarlet and Violet. (pokemon.com 1) (pokemon.com 2) So this is not just another spin-off sitting next to the main series. It is Pokémon’s attempt to do for battling what Pokémon HOME did for storage: pull a messy system spread across multiple games into one permanent place. (pokemon.com) (champions.pokemon.com)
