MetaMask Launches U.S. Crypto Debit Card

MetaMask has launched its Mastercard-powered debit card for full U.S. rollout following a year-long pilot, allowing users to spend crypto directly from self-custodied wallets. This represents a significant real-world adoption milestone that legitimizes crypto as everyday payment infrastructure and could help drive mainstream usage while supporting long-term price stability for cryptocurrencies.

The card is issued by Cross River Bank and powered by Baanx (now operating as Monavate), leveraging Mastercard's global payments network. This nationwide rollout to 49 states, now including New York, follows successful pilot programs that began in late 2024 and continued into early 2025. A key feature is its self-custodial design, meaning users retain full control of their crypto in their MetaMask wallet until the moment of a transaction. Unlike many competing cards that require pre-loading funds onto a centralized platform, this card converts crypto to fiat currency at the exact time of purchase. The card supports a variety of stablecoins and wrapped assets, including USDC, USDT, and wETH. To ensure low transaction fees and high speeds, it primarily utilizes the Linea network, an Ethereum Layer 2 solution developed by Consensys. Two tiers are available: a free virtual card offering 1% cashback and a premium metal card for a $199 annual fee. The metal tier provides a physical stainless steel card, up to 3% cashback on the first $10,000 spent annually, and eliminates foreign transaction fees. Cashback rewards are paid out on-chain in mUSD, an Ethereum-based stablecoin. The card can be added to Apple Pay and Google Pay for immediate use upon approval. This launch places MetaMask in direct competition with other crypto debit cards from providers like Coinbase and Ledger (which also partners with Baanx). However, MetaMask's emphasis on a direct-from-wallet, self-custody spending model is a significant differentiator in the market.
