Tensions Rise in Medak After Politician's Arrest

The arrest of former municipal chairman Mallikarjun Goud has sparked unrest in Medak, Telangana. The situation has raised concerns about political stability and its potential impact on local governance and business sentiment.

The arrest of BRS leader Mallikarjun Goud stems from charges of attempted murder filed against him concerning an incident involving Congress MLA Mynampally Rohit. An SC/ST Atrocity case was also registered against Goud, accusing him of misbehaving with a female Congress party worker who belongs to the SC community. BRS party workers have protested the arrest, claiming the charges are false and politically motivated by the MLA. They allege the confrontation occurred when Goud and others tried to stop the MLA and his associates from distributing cash and liquor during a municipal election campaign. According to BRS leaders, the situation escalated when the MLA allegedly drove his car into a group of their party workers, injuring at least four people. Following the incident, police detained 13 BRS activists in connection with the unrest. This political turmoil unfolds in a town that has recently experienced other forms of unrest. In June 2024, Medak saw communal clashes erupt over the transportation of cattle ahead of Bakrid, which led to the imposition of Section 144. The violence involved vandalism of shops and a hospital. During the June riots, leaders from the BJP and its youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), were arrested in connection with the violence. At that time, BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao commented on the incident, stating that Medak had been peaceful during the previous 9.5 years of his party's rule.
