"Heathers" Extended Through September

"Heathers the Musical" at New World Stages has been extended through September 6, starring Kuhoo Verma as Veronica Sawyer and Casey Likes as J.D. This marks the production's third extension since last summer, reflecting strong audience demand for the cult classic adaptation.

- The musical is based on the 1989 cult classic film of the same name, which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater as Veronica and J.D., respectively. The satirical black comedy was written by Daniel Waters as a cynical contrast to the more optimistic teen films of the era. - This isn't the first time "Heathers: The Musical" has played at New World Stages; its original Off-Broadway production ran at the same venue in 2014. The show was created by the award-winning team of Kevin Murphy ("Reefer Madness") and Laurence O'Keefe ("Legally Blonde," "Bat Boy"). - The current revival is a revised version of the show that originated in London's West End, where it had three hit productions and won the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical. This New York production features new songs and script changes not heard in the 2014 run. - Kuhoo Verma, who plays Veronica, previously won a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Dave Malloy's "Octet." She has also appeared in films such as "The Big Sick" and Hulu's "Plan B." - Casey Likes, who stars as J.D., recently played lead roles on Broadway as Marty McFly in "Back to the Future: The Musical" and William Miller in the musical adaptation of "Almost Famous." - The production's initial run in the summer of 2025 amassed the largest advance sale in the 21-year history of New World Stages. - The show has cultivated a large and devoted fanbase, who refer to themselves as "Corn Nuts," named after a line from the show. To celebrate its one-year anniversary, the production held a special sing-along performance for fans. - A U.S. national tour for the musical is planned to launch in the spring of 2027. Productions are also planned for Australia and New Zealand, and the show is slated to return to the U.K. in the summer of 2026.
