Delhi Metro Expands with New Corridors

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new Delhi Metro corridors on March 7th. The project, which also includes groundwork for three additional lines, is aimed at improving city-wide connectivity and easing traffic congestion.

The 12.3 km Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur section completes the 71.56 km Pink Line, creating India's first fully operational "Ring Metro". This new elevated section features eight stations and a unique double-decker viaduct carrying both the metro line and a road flyover. A second 9.9 km corridor extends the Magenta Line from Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park, bringing the line's total length to nearly 49 km. This stretch includes an engineering marvel where the tracks reach a height of 28.36 meters, making it one of the highest points in the entire Delhi Metro network. These new lines are part of the broader Delhi Metro Phase 4 expansion, a project with an estimated cost of Rs 24,948.65 crore for its priority corridors. Funding is a joint effort between the Central Government, the Delhi Government, and an external loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The expansion pushes the Delhi Metro network, which already carries nearly 7.1 million passengers daily, beyond 416 km. Upon full completion of Phase 4, the total length is expected to surpass 450 km. Looking ahead, groundwork has begun for three more corridors under Phase 5-A. These include a 9.9 km underground Central Vista corridor from RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha and two extensions of the Golden Line to improve airport and NCR connectivity.
