Cord Blood Banking Market to Near $50B by 2031

A market analysis by Mordor Intelligence projects the global cord blood banking services market will reach $49.85 billion by 2031. The growth is attributed to advancements in stem cell applications for genetic disorders and regenerative medicine. North America currently leads the market, holding a 39.54% share in 2025.

The current market relies on established utility, with hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood used in transplants to treat over 80 conditions, including cancers, blood disorders, and immune deficiencies. To date, more than 50,000 such transplants have been performed worldwide. Future growth is underpinned by a robust clinical pipeline. Over 500 clinical trials are investigating cord blood and tissue for applications in regenerative medicine, exploring potential treatments for conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and acquired hearing loss. A significant technological barrier was the limited number of stem cells per unit, often insufficient for adult patients. However, the FDA's 2023 approval of "Omisirge," the first expanded cord blood product, signals a turning point, enabling the multiplication of stem cells to make them viable for a wider range of recipients. The industry operates on a dual-market model. Private banks charge families initial fees between $1,500 and $3,000, plus annual storage fees of $175-$250 for exclusive family use. Public banks accept donations for free, making the units available to any matching patient in need. Key corporate players dominating the U.S. market include Cord Blood Registry (CBR), Cryo-Cell International, and ViaCord. In the rapidly expanding Asia-Pacific market, companies like China Cord Blood Corporation and India's LifeCell International are major forces. This market fits into a broader biopharma trend of high-value, one-time curative treatments. While cord blood banking costs are significant, they are part of an ecosystem that includes gene therapies for diseases like hemophilia and sickle cell, which can carry price tags of $2 million to $4.25 million per dose.
