IPL 2026 Schedule Disrupted by Elections

The IPL will kick off on March 28, but the BCCI is releasing the schedule in two phases due to upcoming state and general elections. RCB is confirmed to host the opener and final, but further venue allocations are on hold pending government security advisories. This isn't the first time the IPL has navigated election-year complexities. During the 2009 general elections, the entire tournament was moved to South Africa, while in 2014, the initial 20 matches of the season were held in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India post-elections. The core operational challenge is the immense strain on security resources. State and central police forces are heavily deployed for election duties, making it impossible to concurrently provide the necessary security blanket for high-profile IPL matches, which are often a target for disruptions.
