Nine Inch Nails Surprise Drop

Nine Inch Nails dropped a surprise 44-track remix album *Tron: Ares - Divergence* with unreleased material — industrial alt-rock fans are hyped. Classic Rock Magazine also covered White Lion's rise/fall: frontman Vito Liuzzi reflected on their easy breakup after hits like "Wait," calling it the "thinking man's hair metal."

*Tron Ares: Divergence* serves as a companion piece to the Nine Inch Nails-credited score for the 2025 film. It marks the band's first remix album in nineteen years, following 2007's *Year Zero Remixed*. The release features contributions from a host of electronic artists, including Boys Noize, Arca, Mark Pritchard, and Danny L Harle, who reinterpret the film's soundscapes. The original *Tron: Ares* soundtrack was the first film score officially released under the Nine Inch Nails band name, rather than as a work by members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The duo, who have previously won Oscars for their film work, opted to forgo orchestral elements entirely for the score, focusing on pulsating synths and distorted textures. The lead single from that soundtrack, "As Alive As You Need Me To Be," recently won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. The "thinking man's hair metal" label applied to White Lion often stemmed from their lyrical depth, which addressed serious themes like war and social injustice, setting them apart from many of their peers. Their biggest hit, the No. 3 charting power ballad "When the Children Cry," was an anti-war protest song inspired by Live Aid. This melodic and more cerebral approach was a hallmark of their sound. The band's 1987 album *Pride* went double-platinum, but the pressure for a quick follow-up, *Big Game*, led to burnout. Frontman Mike Tramp has stated that the band's 1991 dissolution was also fueled by the rise of grunge music, which shifted MTV's focus, and a complete lack of support from their record label and management once their commercial momentum slowed.
