Nu Holdings Leverages AI for Fintech Growth
A recent analysis highlights digital bank Nu Holdings ($NU) as an AI-native consumer tech platform serving 127 million customers. The company uses a cloud-native model to maintain low operating costs and employs AI-driven underwriting, enhanced by its acquisition of Hyperplane. Nu is reportedly planning expansion into new markets and pursuing a US charter.
Founded in 2013 by David Vélez, Cristina Junqueira, and Adam Edward Wible, Nu Holdings aimed to disrupt the Brazilian banking industry. Vélez, now CEO, brought experience from Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Sequoia Capital. By the end of 2025, the company's customer base had swelled to 131 million, adding 17 million customers in that year alone. In Brazil, Nu now serves 62% of the adult population, making it the largest private financial institution by customer numbers in the country. Financially, Nu reported strong performance in the fourth quarter of 2025 with revenues of $4.9 billion and a record net income of $895 million. The company maintains a low monthly average cost to serve per active customer at just $0.80. The acquisition of Hyperplane, a Silicon Valley data intelligence firm founded in 2022, is central to Nu's AI-first strategy. Hyperplane's technology is being integrated to power core machine learning capabilities, enhance credit underwriting, and create more personalized customer experiences. Nu is actively expanding beyond its core markets of Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. The company received conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January 2026 for a national bank charter, with a planned launch in 2027. The U.S. expansion is being led by co-founder Cristina Junqueira, who has relocated to the United States. The board for the U.S. operations will be chaired by Roberto Campos Neto, the former President of the Central Bank of Brazil.
