New Japanese Restaurant Opens in S. Mpls

A new Japanese restaurant, Izakaya Kazama, is slated to open in South Minneapolis. The eatery will specialize in ramen and other authentic dishes, reflecting a growing local demand for more diverse dining experiences in the Twin Cities.

Izakaya Kazama is the latest project from chef Yuichiro Matthew Kazama, a former punk rock drummer who has already made a significant mark on the Minneapolis food scene. His first restaurant, Ramen Kazama, opened in 2015 on Nicollet Avenue and quickly became an institution, often with lines out the door. Before opening his own ramen shop, Kazama honed his craft at Fuji-Ya, where he developed a following through a dedicated "ramen night." This experience allowed him to perfect his recipes and build a reputation for authentic Japanese comfort food. His dedication to the craft is something he developed through years of trial and error, starting by making bowls for friends. Kazama's culinary philosophy is rooted in offering authentic Japanese "soul food." He draws inspiration from his upbringing in Japan and aims to introduce a variety of Japanese dishes to the Minneapolis dining public. This vision extends to his other ventures, including TokiDoki Burger, which puts a Japanese twist on the American classic. The new izakaya will join a vibrant and diverse culinary landscape in South Minneapolis. The area, particularly along Nicollet Avenue's "Eat Street," is known for its wide array of international cuisines and locally-owned establishments. Izakaya Kazama's focus on authentic small plates and drinks will add another dimension to this bustling dining destination.
