Players stopped shooting

Players in ARC Raiders reportedly stopped shooting and began forming temporary alliances through voice chat, changing the expected combat flow. The Guardian describes this emergent behaviour as players negotiating trust and cooperation rather than following the game's combat-first script, suggesting social ambiguity can become a core mechanic. Players in ARC Raiders have been using proximity voice chat to talk through encounters instead of shooting on sight, reshaping how fights break out in Embark Studios’ extraction game. (theguardian.com) Embark’s own support page says proximity voice chat lets players speak to raiders outside their squad and “persuade other raiders to become allies.” The game’s official site still frames that same world as one where players must also beware of “Raiders preying on others.” (id.embark.games) (arcraiders.com) The Guardian reported, citing Embark, that roughly one in five players have never knocked out another raider, while half have knocked out fewer than 10. The paper also said more than 95% of players use the game’s proximity chat, giving those negotiations a direct in-game channel. (theguardian.com) (resetera.com) ARC Raiders is built as an extraction game: players enter hostile maps, gather loot, and try to leave alive with it. Embark’s Steam page says runs can be played solo or in parties of up to three, under pressure from both machine enemies and “the unpredictable choices of fellow survivors.” (store.steampowered.com) That makes the reported behavior unusual for the genre, which usually rewards ambushes and quick betrayals. In ARC Raiders, the same encounter can now turn into a bargain, a warning, or a temporary truce made over open microphones. (theguardian.com) (id.embark.games) Embark has been tuning the game around player behavior since launch on October 30, 2025. In November 2025, the studio said it had enabled duo-prioritized matchmaking, separating solos, duos, and trios more carefully to reduce friction in raids. (arcraiders.com 1) (arcraiders.com 2) The studio has also kept adjusting the game in 2026 with monthly content drops and quality-of-life updates. Its January 23 roadmap promised a content update every month, and an April 4 post focused on cutting menu and crafting friction rather than pushing players toward more player-versus-player combat. (arcraiders.com 1) (arcraiders.com 2) Players and critics had already noticed the cooperative streak months ago. In a November 11, 2025 feature, Eurogamer described a split between player-versus-player fans and “anti-player-versus-player” players, with some players openly punishing those who attacked first. (eurogamer.net) Embark’s official pitch has not changed: ARC Raiders remains a game about risk, loot, and the threat of other humans. What has changed is that many players now seem to treat a stranger with a microphone as one more system to negotiate, not just one more target. (arcraiders.com) (theguardian.com)
