Photonis Defense Lands Army Night Vision Contract from SBIR Roots

Photonis Defense has been awarded a U.S. Army contract for advanced Bi-ocular Night Vision Devices (BiNODs). The win is a major success story for the SBIR pipeline and a strategic milestone for parent company Exosens' expansion in the U.S. defense market.

The $352.6 million contract awarded to Photonis Defense is part of a larger $1.27 billion procurement by the U.S. Army for Binocular Night Observation Devices (BiNODs). The Army also awarded contracts to L3Harris ($466 million) and Elbit Systems of America ($450.6 million), with all work estimated to be completed by February 27, 2033. This multi-vendor approach aims to develop and produce a low-cost, helmet-mounted, dual-tube night vision system to enhance soldier lethality. The BiNOD program follows the Army's successful Enhanced Night Vision Goggle–Binocular (ENVG-B) program, which has already seen thousands of units delivered by L3Harris and Elbit Systems. The move from single-tube monoculars to dual-tube binoculars provides improved depth perception and situational awareness for soldiers operating in low-light conditions. This contract is a key component of the Army's "Soldier Lethality" modernization priority. For parent company Exosens, this contract is a significant strategic victory, validating its March 2025 investment in a new production facility in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The win strengthens the French company's foothold in the U.S. defense market, which CEO Jérôme Cerisier described as "the most demanding single market in the world for night vision technologies." Production for the BiNOD contract will be based in the U.S. The procurement process was competitive, with six initial bidders vying for the contracts. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) structure allows the Army to issue task orders for development, production, and testing as needed over the life of the contract. This award marks a new phase in Exosens' long-term expansion and relationship with the U.S. Army.
