RAK Tourism Plans Massive Expansion
Ras al Khaimah's tourism board unveiled plans to triple visitor numbers and double hotel capacity while preserving local culture under its new leadership strategy. The emirate will significantly increase international marketing and event hosting to compete in the Middle East's tourism sector. Social media highlighted RAK's Vision 2030 growth strategy under Phillipa Harrison's leadership to attract global visitors.
- The emirate's "Vision 2030" sets a specific target of attracting over 3.5 million visitors annually, building on a record 1.35 million overnight visitors in 2025. That year saw a 6% increase in visitors and a 12% rise in tourism revenues. - A centerpiece of the expansion is the Wynn Al Marjan Island, a $3.9 billion integrated resort scheduled to open in early 2027. The 70-story property will feature over 1,500 rooms, 22 dining venues, a large events center, and the UAE's first licensed gaming area. - The hotel development pipeline is heavily focused on the high-end market, with 71% of the more than 7,500 new rooms planned by 2027 being in the five-star category. Upcoming international brands include Four Seasons, Nobu, W Hotel, and Nikki Beach. - The new strategy, led by former Tourism Australia chief Phillipa Harrison, aims to differentiate RAK from neighboring emirates by emphasizing "quiet luxury," nature, and adventure. This includes developing Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, with attractions like 100 kilometers of new hiking and biking trails. - Economically, the long-term goal is for tourism to contribute one-third of Ras Al Khaimah's GDP, a significant increase from its current 5% share. - The master developer Marjan is overseeing several large-scale projects beyond hotels, including Marjan Beach and RAK Central, to support the growth. This expansion also includes 16 branded residential projects, which are expected to add approximately 5,600 units by 2029.
